On the day he was born, Tony Zale's future was hardly guaranteed, but his would be an exemplary life. It would be one of triumph in the ring and fulfillment in his faith and his family. His would be a career and a life that would inspire everyone who knew him or knew of him. This is the story of how the son of Polish immigrants beat the kind of odds others chose not to. Tony was a "man of steel" in so many ways.

Elite athletes of the 1940's deserve a special place in history, as many of them went off to serve our country in a time of war. Some, like Ted Williams and Tony Zale, lost four years of their peak athletic prowess and earning capacity to this cause. And yes, Ted Williams and Tony Zale deserve mention in the same breath as great athletes.

Tony Zale probably would not be on anyone's short list of great Champions were it not for his trilogy with Rocky Graziano, and his blood and guts win in the first fight. But it was his whole persona that bears admiration. His regimen, his classic toughness, and his flawless moral code. He was more than a warrior, he was a role model. Even in the 1940's when sports writers hid the flaws and peccadilloes of athletes, Zale's virtuousity was unquestioned.

This book was written by his nephew Thad, collaborated with Clay Moyle, the boxing historian and author of fine books on Sam Langford and Billy Miske. What I enjoyed was not only the recounting of the fights, but also that there was much written about his life after boxing, his struggles, and the meaning he leant to his work, friends and family.

Zale was a significant figure in boxing history, having held his title for seven years. His dedication, schooling and work ethic have rarely been matched. Because he did not live a flashy lifestyle, and avoided controversy, his story has not been told before now. It is a highly worthwhile story, and his nephew does it justice.

Good biography
Lived in Gary new many of his family and followed boxing very close. Boxed in the C.Y.O against his Chicago Team.
Anybody who loves the History of Boxing, will love this Book
Thus is indeed a terrific book about a great fighter and true gentleman. But can you say hagiography? Written by his nephew who idolized him it is not a well balanced book about Tony's rivals nor about his era in boxing. Graziano is sold short as is Robinson. If Tony could not best boxers like Soose or Conn could he handle Robinson who was a better boxer than both and arguably the pound for pound best fighter in the modern era. A guy who fought top middleweights when he was barely 144 LBS. And why did Tony not fight LaMotta? None of this is addressed in the book. And Graziano made Zale as much as Zale made Graziano.
I learned boxing from Tony Zale in Chicago the 60's. He was a fine proud man who was an inspiration to everyone and I mourned his passing. my great uncle saw Tony fight many times in Chicago.
I highly recommend this book to learn about his boxing life and his humanity.
I love this book Tony Zale was my husbands Great Uncle. It has been great to read about his life. We were at his funeral so sad to say goodbye. My father and my son-in-law are in the same cemetary I go by often in the summer.I'm hoping to see some of Tonys fights and get in touch with Ted and tell him how much we enjoy the book and to thank him for making it available to us....
Tony and I both come from Gary, IND. So, he was one of my boyhood heroes growing up being a class act both inside and outside of the ring. Need I say more?!
A VERY GOOD READ.MANY PHOTOS
